From St George's Crypt
in response to our donation of toys following the December toy service
Thank you for your interest in our work. Over
the last few years the work of the Crypt has seen lots of changes, as the
people group who need us is changing. The average age of our clients is
24 and at the moment we do not have one person older than 20 in our overnight
centre. Therefore, it is obvious that these people do not choose to live
on the street and they need more than a bed. We provide training and many
opportunities for them to get involved in our activities. The whole aim
of the training and activities is to teach them lifeskills they may have
missed out on and building up their self-confidence to settle back into
society. This is done via our many projects, such as Nurture which provides
horticultural work in gardens and allotments, and catering in our kitchen
and café. There are also opportunities to work in our kitchen and
our second-hand shops.
When our clients are moving on into their own accommodation, we put them
into our floating support service, which means help with settling in, writing
cvs, applying for jobs and many other ways.
We really appreciate the people who support us in prayer and in practical
ways. We have the help of at least 80 without which we could not function.
We are also very grateful for donations of money, as it costs approximately
£29,000 to run the Crypt per week. Donations of tins and toiletries
are always useful. We normally run out of coffee, sugar and long life milk.
We have speakers who go to various churches and groups to do a presentation
of the work and we also do tours round the Crypt, either in the evening
or after 2 pm, when the Centre is less busy.
